Local Services Ads vs Google Search Ads for HVAC: Which Should You Run?

Short answer

Local Services Ads charge per lead and show a Google trust badge, but give you little control. Search Ads charge per click and give you full control over keywords, ad copy, landing pages and budget by job type. For most HVAC companies the answer is both: LSA for cheap, trusted calls at the top of the page, and Search Ads to scale the jobs you want most.

Google gives HVAC companies two main ways to buy calls: Local Services Ads and regular Search Ads. They look similar to a homeowner, but they work very differently for you. Here's how to choose.

What Local Services Ads are

Local Services Ads (LSA) are the boxes that often appear at the very top of Google for searches like "AC repair near me". They show your business name, rating, review count, hours and a trust badge. A homeowner taps to call or message you directly.

You pay per lead, not per click

With LSA, you're charged when a homeowner contacts you through the ad, usually a call or a message, not when they view or click it. You set a weekly budget and choose which job types and areas you want leads for. What each lead costs varies a lot by market, job type and season, so treat any number you hear as a rough guide for someone else's market, not yours.

The trust badge

To run LSA, your business goes through Google's screening. For HVAC this has typically included background checks, license checks and proof of insurance. Passing gives you a badge, historically called Google Guaranteed for home services. Google has been changing badge names and requirements, so check Google's current requirements for your area before you apply. Screening can take a few weeks, so start early.

How LSA decides who shows up

You can't bid on keywords with LSA. Google decides who shows based on factors it lists, including:

  • Proximity: how close you are to the homeowner searching.
  • Reviews: your rating and how many reviews you have.
  • Responsiveness: how fast and how often you answer leads.
  • Business hours and whether you're open when the search happens.
  • Serious complaints against your business.

The big lesson: missed calls hurt you twice. You lose that job, and Google may show you less often afterward.

Lead disputes

If you get charged for a lead that wasn't real, such as spam, a wrong number or a service you don't offer, you can dispute it and may get credited. Google has changed how disputes and automatic credits work over time, so review your leads every week and dispute bad ones promptly.

What Google Search Ads are

Search Ads are the classic text ads that appear on search results, labeled "Sponsored". You pay when someone clicks. In return, you control nearly everything:

  • Keywords: bid on "furnace repair" and skip "furnace filters".
  • Negative keywords: block searches like "jobs", "DIY" or "parts" that waste money.
  • Ad copy: your offer, your guarantee, your same-day promise, in your words.
  • Landing pages: send no-heat searches to a no-heat page with a big call button.
  • Budget by job type: spend more on high-margin repairs and duct cleaning, less on low-value calls.
  • Schedule and area: run harder in peak hours and the neighborhoods you want.

The trade-off: you pay for clicks that don't call. That's why tracking matters. You need to know which clicks became booked jobs, or you're guessing. Our guide to Google Ads mistakes that waste HVAC budgets covers the most common leaks.

When to run LSA

  • You have strong reviews, or are building them fast.
  • Someone answers the phone every time, during the hours you're listed.
  • You want a simple, lower-effort lead source with a trust badge.
  • You're willing to review and dispute leads every week.

When to run Search Ads

  • You want more of specific jobs, like duct cleaning or furnace repair, and fewer of others.
  • LSA alone doesn't give you enough volume in peak season.
  • You have, or will build, landing pages that convert. See HVAC website design.
  • You can track calls back to clicks, so you know your real return.

Why most HVAC shops should run both

LSA and Search Ads often show on the same results page, and a homeowner doesn't care which one you came from. Running both gives you more space at the top of the page for the searches that pay your bills.

They also cover each other's weak spots. LSA brings trusted calls with little management, but you can't steer it toward specific jobs. Search Ads let you go after exactly the work you want, but need tighter management and good landing pages. Together, you get the trust of the badge and the control of keywords.

The key is measuring both the same way: revenue from booked jobs divided by what you spent. That's your return on ad spend. Our target for clients is 6-10x, though it's a target, not a guarantee, and your market, budget and how fast you answer calls all move it. Read what a good ROAS looks like for HVAC to run the math for your own business, and how much to spend on Google Ads to set a budget.

Whichever you run, answer every call. Speed to answer is the cheapest way to get more out of both ad types.
